Kindle Skills - Disconnecting Your Kindle

July 2, 2010 Cindy O'Neal
Windows:
Safely remove your Kindle from a USB connection to your computer. Click on the Start button, click Computer (or My Computer) to open. Look for your Kindle listed as an external drive. It should clearly be labeled Kindle. Right click on it and choose Eject or Safely Remove. You will see a little popup appear on the bottom right of your main screen indicating you can now disconnect the USB cable. This will take your Kindle out of External Drive Mode and you should see your home screen appear on the front of your Kindle. You can now use it and keep it connected to the USB (so it can continue to charge) or you can disconnect the thing.

Mac:
When your Kindle is connected to your computer via USB, a little icon will appear on your main screen that is labeled Kindle. Double click this to open and see the contents in a Finder window. When you are finished and want to unmount (take it out of External Drive Mode) your Kindle to either use it while it continues to charge or completely disconnect, drag the icon to the trash. That's it.
