Manybooks.net - Always Free

Manybooks.net note: You can download these books from your Kindle, directly from the web site. It is certainly worth clicking these book links and experimenting with your 5-way toggle. It may be a little clunky, but actually works fine. You will make good use of that free Amazon whispernet connection. The .mobi file format is my personal favorite for books from Manybooks.net on my Kindle, but you can also use .prc, .txt, and .azw files with no trouble. Experiment with them all and decide for yourself which formats you like the best. Manybooks.net books are always FREE!

The Planet Savers

Marion Zimmer Bradley
"One body, two minds--and a world in the balance!"

Marion Zimmer Bradley has written some of the finest science fiction in print. She has been away from our pages too long. So this story is in the nature of a triumphant return. It could well be her best to date.

The Treasure of the Isle of Mist

William Woodthorpe Tarn
A fairy tale for grownups and children. Delicately imaginative and beautifully written, it will delight occasional readers who like veiled parables on the worth-while in life.

E.F. Benson
David Blaize is the son of an archdeacon, the friend of a bishop's nephew, and this is a story of their friendship and life at a public school. Possibly the tale may be reminiscent of the author's own youth. It tells of cleanliness, physical and moral, of the self-restraint learned from one another by boys who were to be among the future leaders in England.

The Last Stroke

a detective story
Lawrence L. Lynch
An unusually good story of the detective variety. It opens in the States with the mysterious murder of a young schoolmaster who, we are later to learn, is in the direct line to a large inheritance in England. The inevitable detective is called in by the unfortunate man's brother, and it is not too much to say that Frank Ferrars proves himself to be a worthy second to Sherlock Holmes himself.

Billy Budd

Herman Melville
Written during the last years of Melville's life, a quarter of a century after his main work, by which his reputation was established, had been completed; and it was not published until 1924, when it was included in the limited Standard Edition. In the opinion of many critics it is Melville's most significant work after Moby Dick, and one of the most remarkable short novels ever written.

Burn

James Patrick Kelly
Simplicity ain't what it used to be.

The tiny planet of Morobe's Pea has been sold, and the new owner has a few ideas. He has renamed it Walden, and voluntary simplicity is now the rule. It will become a rural paradise for everyone who embraces Thoreau’s philosophy.

But the previous tenants have their own ideas. And they are willing to set themselves on fire to defend them...
