Kindle Skills - Desktop dragging and dropping

Isn't it amazing how when you click those blasted icons, sometimes they open a program, and sometimes they don't. They jump all over the screen and can get themselves into places you wouldn't believe possible. And sometimes icons appear for (apparently) no reason at all, especially when you have just installed something new.

How you click, when you click, and who you click, decides what that little picture is going to do. If you double click on the words just below the icon too slowly, the words will become highlighted to indicate you can rename it by typing in a new name before the highlighting goes away. If you don't want to rename it, click somewhere away from the icon to make the highlighting disappear.

If you click the icon itself once, and hold down the left mouse button, you can move it all over the screen. As soon as you let go of the mouse button, the deed is done. If you change your mind, just repeat the process and put it back. The big secret to dragging and dropping files (Windows and Macs) is to not let go of the mouse button until you have your file exactly where you want it.

If you would like to practice, create a practice folder on your Desktop. Right click (Windows) or CTRL click (Mac) and choose New, then Folder. You can give your new folder a name or not, it is only for practice and you can delete it later. You will be using it to practice dragging some of those extra icons on your desktop into it. Then open the folder and drag the same icons back to your Desktop. This way you won't have to worry about losing anything by accidentally dropping it into the wrong folder.

Many people don't understand how important a skill dragging and dropping can be. If you have a Kindle, and have ever tried to put a book you downloaded into the Documents folder, you know how much this skill is needed. If you have ever "dropped" a file in the wrong folder, you know exactly how important this skill is. Practice moving things around on your desktop if you need to. There are too many free books on manybooks.net you will be missing out on if you are uncomfortable dragging and dropping.

You know that Solitaire game on your computer so many seem to be addicted to? It can be the best way to learn how to drag and drop. No muss, no fuss, and you can't hurt a thing if you miss. So now, you have a reason to use it, not an excuse. Do I hear an AMEN? Enjoy!
