Kindle 3 Folders - the first image

A very special thank you to Barbara for sending me a screen shot of her Kindle 3 (now known as the Kindle Keyboard) while it was hooked to her computer with that lovely USB cable. I especially appreciate the way she got a nice shot of her folders  with my blog site right behind it. Now that was nice!

Kindle 3 (now Kindle Keyboard) file structure

When you hook your Kindle up to your computer (doesn't matter if it is a mac or pc), you are basically turning it into an external drive. This will allow you to click the icon to open it and peek at the various folders on your little machine. Different Kindles, I am finding for one reason or another, have different folders. Here is what you need to know about the folders you can (and should) interact with.

audible folder: This is where (if you have an account with audible.com) your audio books will go if you have a Kindle 3 with wifi capabilities. On your Audible.com account when you purchase an audio book, it will offer to send the book to any Kindles you have able to receive the file via wifi. 3g won't cut it here.

You can also download your audiobook files to your computer, then drag them physically to this folder on your Kindle. If you don't see an audible folder, don't just put one there. It usually means your Kindle is not audio capable. The only one I know of that won't play audible files is the newest basic Kindle ($79).

Any files you do put in this folder will have special powers. The file names or titles will appear on your Home screen and you can choose them like any other book. You will have a play button on your screen (navigate to it with the 5-way controller), a stop button and a back and forward button. The files you put here don't necessarily have to be audible.com files. They can be single music (mp3 files). The thing is you will have complete control over their play if they are in this folder.

documents folder: This is the folder where any Kindle friendly book files should go. If you purchase a book (even a free one) on Amazon, the file will be sent here automatically. If you download book files from other places (like manybooks.net) you will need to drag the files to this folder in order for them to appear on your home screen as a book title.

music folder: This is where you can load a bunch of mp3 files (music) if you would like to have music playing in the background while you are reading a book on your Kindle. Press the alt+p keys to begin playing. Press alt+p again to stop. You won't be able to see these files on your home screen. They are for background playing only and will play in order of their file names.

The above information is for the Kindle 3 only. I am still looking for folder pictures (screen shots) of the newest $79 Kindle and the newest Kindle Touch.
