Every book you purchase on Amazon is automatically backed up on the Amazon.com servers. When you purchase a book from Amazon, it is sent to your Kindle. When you finish reading it, you can underline the book title from your Home screen, toggle your 5-way switch to the left and choose remove from device by pressing in on the 5-way switch. If the item is a personal file, you will see the option to Delete, rather than just remove the item. When you remove a book you purchased from Amazon from your Kindle, it is only a View Archived Items click with the Menu button and your 5-way switch.

When you have a book underlined (selected) from the Home screen, toggle the 5-way to the right to see the cover image and additional options:
