Bridge To Happiness ~ Jill Barnett
Available for free in the following regions: United States

   Product Description

From the luxury of San Francisco's famous hills to the wild freedom of the majestic snow-covered Sierra Mountains, BRIDGE TO HAPPINESS is the intensely dramatic story of one woman's life, the idyllic moments, her humanity, her love, and finally, the difficult road she must walk alone...to discover the strong woman she is destined to become. When March Randolph meets Mike Cantrell, she has no idea how her life will change, and how time will change her. For over three decades she and Mike forge a marriage, a family and a business together, helping to make snowboarding into a popular, worldwide winter sport, and raising four strong-willed and independent children into a adulthood, never once fearing the future won't be as golden as their past. In a heartbeat everything changes, and March and her family suffer a tragic change, one that drives a schism into her once perfect life, and will test the bonds of love and family far beyond any definition of recovery. Suddenly March is stuck in the past, unable to move forward, and only if she, alone, finds the strength and will to move on, can any of the Cantrells have a single, glimmer of hope at a new life of happiness. "Bridge To Happiness is a beautiful and poignant exploration of loss, love and unexpected opportunities. This book is for any woman who has ever loved and lost and dared to reach for happiness." Kristin Hannah, New York Times Bestselling Author of Winter Garden

Ask Mrs. Wizard - Chinese

Dear Mrs. Wizard:

I am Chinese and would like to read books in Chinese language.  I cannot find any on Amazon.  Do you think Amazon will have Chinese books soon?  I found free Chinese books on Haodoo.net.  But I don't know how to get them on my Kindle.  I tried to download one to my Kindle to read it with the wireless on.  But I could not flip to next page.  I know a lot of Chinese people who own Kindle want to read Chinese books and many who did not buy Kindle is because they don't know where to find the Chinese books to read on Kindle.  I think this is a good topic to write about in your next blog?  Please help.

Thanks,
Fan-Chin
===============
Wow!  Thank you for a very interesting question. I think the best people you need to get with are the customer service folks at Amazon. They would have a much better idea of when and/or if any books would be available in Chinese any time soon. They certainly need to know there is an interest. If they think there is enough interest, someone at Amazon will see to it something happens to accomodate that interest.

Haodoo.net sounds like a wonderful place for free books in Chinese, but aside from any special characters that may be needed to see them on the Kindle, you need to pay special attention to the format of the book you are downloading to put into the documents folder on your Kindle. The Kindle will accept the following files:
  • .prc
  • .azw
  • .txt
  • .mobi
I believe the special characters common to the Chinese language are going to be the biggest hurdle. Certainly spend some quality time on the phone with the good folks at Amazon.

I wish you well in your quest!

Warmest Regards,
Cindy

Kindle Skills - No Limit

There may be a limit to the number of Kindles (or Kindle devices) a book can be on (on one Amazon account), but there is no limit to the number of actual Kindle devices you can personally have on your Amazon account.

So... if you are sharing your Amazon account for Kindle reading purposes. You may be able to have a certain book on no more than 3 Kindle devices at one time. So if you have more than 3 people, and more than 3 devices, just take turns. When one person is finished with the book in question, remove it from that device so someone else can put it on theirs.

My daughter Kelly and I share my Amazon account. She is using my Kindle 2 and I just never took it off my account. It just makes sense, since she likes many of the same books I do, and we enjoy reading some books "together."

You may have more Kindle devices than you realize. These free Kindle software applications (apps) create a seamless link between your device and Amazon, allowing you to do most everything you can on the actual Kindle. You have access to the archives on your Kindle Amazon account as well as all those thousands and thousands of FREE books you can "buy" on Amazon for your Kindle.
Buy Once... Read Everywhere!
You have a Kindle device if you have:
  • A Windows PC (free Kindle for PC software)
  • An iPad (a free app)
  • An iPod Touch (free app)
  • iPhone (free app)
  • Android phone or tablet (free app)
  • Mac or Macbook (free Kindle for Mac software)
  • Blackberry (free app)
  • Windows Phone 7 (free app)
With any of these, you can do the same thing you can do on any Kindle. You can download and read ebooks, purchase Kindle books from Amazon, even get free samples of books so you can "try before you buy."

You need basic computer skills to download the free software, install it and use it. And... you can't have too many Kindles in the house!

Sharing is good.

New Software Update for the Kindle

Looks like Amazon has some new features for our latest generation Kindle and the Kindle 3G.  If you have one of these newer Kindles and want to get an early preview, you can read more about it and download it from here. You want to open this link from your computer. If you go to mrswizard.com you can find a direct link to this blog on the main page (top right).

Full instructions and everything you need to know (if you are brave enough) to install the update manually on your Kindle are in this Amazon Kindle Support area. Personally, I would rather wait until they have it ready for the automatic update. All you need to do is keep your Internet connection on for a few weeks and one day you will wake up and it will just be there! Surprise Surprise! That sure saves a bunch of brain cells. I would rather use them for my latest bodice ripper romance!

Don't know if my curiosity is going to let me wait patiently very long though. I sure do like the idea of real page numbers.

From Amazon:
Public Notes – This feature lets Kindle users choose to make their book notes and highlights available for others to see.  Any Kindle user – including authors, their fans, book reviewers, professors and passionate readers everywhere – can opt-in to share their thoughts on book passages and ideas with friends, family members, colleagues, and the greater Kindle community of people who love to read.  This is a new way for readers to share their excitement and knowledge about books and get more from the books they read.  To review and turn on Public Notes in your own books, view the Public Notes of people you follow, track your reading activities, see Popular Highlights and your annotations, and view your full library of books, go to http://kindle.amazon.com.

•    Real Page Numbers – Our customers have told us they want real page numbers that match the page numbers in print books so they can easily reference and cite passages, and read alongside others in a book club or class.  Rather than add page numbers that don’t correspond to print books, which is how page numbers have been added to e-books in the past, we’re adding real page numbers that correspond directly to a book’s print edition. We’ve already added real page numbers to tens of thousands of Kindle books, including the top 100 bestselling books in the Kindle Store that have matching print editions and thousands more of the most popular books.  Page numbers will also be available on our free “Buy Once, Read Everywhere” Kindle apps in the coming months.

•    Before You Go… – When you reach the end of the book, we will now offer a seamless experience that lets you immediately rate the book, share a message about the book with your social network, get personalized recommendations for what to read next, and see more books by the same author.

•    New Newspaper and Magazine Layout – We’re introducing a new and improved layout for newspapers and magazines.  This new layout gives you a quick snapshot of the news and helps you decide what you want to read first.

All latest generation Kindle and Kindle 3G customers will receive this software update automatically via Wi-Fi once it becomes available. We will update the Kindle Community forum when we complete the Early Preview and begin to automatically deliver the update.

My Family Cookbook - Sample

Note: If you are reading this on your Kindle and want to get a book from the Kindle store now, type the title with your Kindle, then toggle your 5-way switch to the right until the word store is highlighted. Press in on it to search. When the title comes up, use the 5-way toggle switch to move around the book info area to read more about the book, purchase the book, or have a sample sent to your Kindle. You can keep a free sample of any book as long as you like. It is a great way to check out a book before you commit to an actual purchase and make it your own.

Do take a look at it in the Kindle store and have a sample sent to your Kindle. You will be able to see the complete list of recipes included as well as the formatting.

You can use MS Word to do personal documents, then use Mobipocket Creator (find it with a google search) to quickly turn them into a .prc file, which is just the file you need to put directly into your Kindle Documents folder for use on your personal Kindle.

Enjoy this little sample... If you have a sweet tooth, this will fix it!

Dessert - Bread Pudding

This is a great way to get a little extra mileage out of bread that has gotten a little old, but isn't stale enough to toss.

Ingredients:
1/2 loaf stale bread (broken into small pieces)
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups whole milk
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup raisins

Directions:
In 4 cup measuring cup, mix eggs and sugar well
Add milk and vanilla and mix
Add bread pieces (enough to soak into the milk mixture)  Mixture will be thick when stirring
Stir in raisins
Pour mixture into a baking pan
sprinkle cinnamon on top of mixture
bake in 350 degree F oven until knife poked in center comes out clean (about 45 minutes)

Kindle Skills - Screen Rotation

While you are reading a book, you can rotate the screen if you need to see better. This comes in handy with pdf files that open better now on the latest Kindle, but still leave a lot to be desired as far as viewing is concerned.

If you rotate your page so you have the wide view, you should be able to see the entire width of the page.

To "lock" your screen into portrait or landscape (wide) mode:

  • Press the Text (Aa) key on the bottom row of the keyboard. Screen Rotation will be displayed at the bottom of the menu.
  • Move the 5-way to select one of the 4 options. This will lock your screen in that view until you change it again.
  • Press the center button on the 5-way to lock in your changes.
NOTES
  • The Kindle DX has an auto option on the Screen Rotation line. Choose this and your screen will rotate depending on how you hold it.
  • You can only view Kindle Store pages in portrait (tall) mode.
  • The buttons work the same in any rotation, but the 5-way controller movements will switch when you switch rotation to match the way you are holding your Kindle.

Kindle Skills - Lending Enabled

Now you can share many of your books with your friends and family without sharing your account.

For many of the books available in the Kindle store, it is possible to purchase it, then lend it to a friend. They can keep it for 2 weeks, during which time you will not have access to it. It really is like lending someone a hard copy from your personal library.

Titles available for lending are determined by the publisher. If you are browsing the Kindle store, but haven't purchased the book yet, you can quickly see if it is available for lending by looking at the Product Details below the book cover. Look for the word Lending in bold, then the word Enabled.

I did a little poking around, and there were quite a few of the ones I looked at that had lending enabled. Might be something to consider when you are thinking about purchasing your next book. Lending Enabled means you can get double duty out of it if you want.

To check on books you have already purchased, visit your Account area and go to Manage Your Kindle. Click the + sign to the left of any title so the details will appear. If your purchased book is lendable, you will see a Loan this book button. Click it and fill out the information for the person you want to lend it to, including their personal email address. They will receive an email letting them know how they can "borrow" the book.

No Kindle Required: Your friend doesn't have to have a Kindle (although everyone should have one) to read their borrowed book. Amazon has a Free Kindle app for iPhone, Android, Mac, PC and even the iPad. Actually, while reading a book on a PC isn't very portable, it ain't bad! And it can open a whole new world of ebooks for someone who isn't quite sure about all this yet. All that is required is a love of reading. All they need to do is click the Accept button and if they don't have a Kindle or Kindle app, Amazon will take them through the steps needed to get what they need.

If your borrower is already a Kindle user, they will receive an email letting them know how to pick up their book. If they have multiple Kindles, they can choose where to have it sent (their regular Kindle, or maybe their Kindle for PC or iPhone).

Amazon will keep track of the time for you and your friend, and let you both know when the book will be returned to you and no longer available to your friend. Two weeks though? Should be plenty of time!
