Kindle Skills - Backing up Collections

Collections are stored on Amazon
When you create a new collection, Amazon saves your collection. It will appear in Archived Items on other Kindles registered to your Amazon.com account. You can transfer collections across registered Kindles. This includes "real" Kindles only. Additional devices (like the iPad and Kindle for PC and Mac apps) don't support collections yet (darn it).

I believe this also means, if you lose your Kindle to an accident or something, and need to replace it, You should see your collection from the old Kindle in the Archives when you begin setting up the new one. You should be able to transfer the collection to your new Kindle.

special note: this will probably not work if you deregister the old/damaged Kindle. Wait until your collection is safely transferred to the new one before you do this. I looked in the Archives from my Kindle DX and was easily able to see the collections from my daughter's Kindle and my neice's, but not the DX I was holding in my hand.

How to get your collections back?
After poking around in the Kindle forums a bit, I discovered (but can't verify personally) a way to restore your collections if you lose the contents of your Kindle and then restore them from a backup on your computer. According to several posters, you can deregister your Kindle from your account, then register it again and the collections will appear.

I don't know that I would risk trying this on a Kindle with several hundred books and quite a lot of time invested in setting up your Collections. What I'm trying to say is do not try this at home just for fun. It could turn out to be very UN-fun.

Kindle Skills - Adding to Collections

A quick way to add multiple books to a Collection

• From the Home screen, right click (with the 5-way) or move the switch to the right on any collection.
• One of the choices you will see is Add/Remove Items. Choose it by navigating down until it is underlined, then press in on the center button.
• You will see a complete list of all the books you have on your Kindle, minus any collections they may be in. It is possible to have the same book in several different collections.
• Use the 5-way to navigate down and up and the page buttons on your Kindle to navigate from page to page of books.
• When you have a bok selected (underlined) you want to put into the collection you have selected, press in on the 5-way to add it to that collection.
• If a book is already in that particular collection, you will instead have the option to remove the book. You don't need to worry about putting it into the same collection twice.
• Press the Home button at any time to return to the Home screen and choose another collection.

The Future Kindle?

What will the next generation Kindle look like? I'm reading all sorts of predictions, mostly about an Amazon tablet in the works.

If Amazon can:

• Keep it close to the cost of the Kindle today
• Give it WiFi ability (maybe even Whispernet?) It needs to be able to do double duty as a tablet computer, so the Internet and apps are important.
• Flash capabilities
• Give it a nice color screen (e-ink would be nice, but color is nicer)
• Give it a Kindle app that is slick and trouble free

I'll be lining up with the rest.

If it does flash... It's an iPad killer. My daughter will love giving mine a new home. If anyone can do it, Amazon can.

There is talk about the Kindle being able to handle additional formats, like ePub. Isn't that the format libraries use? If that happens, it will open the door to a whole new level of reader.

It is an exciting time we are living in. I'm really happy to see more and more people reading (or at least admitting to reading). It's nice to know more and more people are "discovering" the classics while poking around in the free offerings on Amazon and other places like Manybooks.net.

I used to live in libraries when I was a kid... Wore out lots of shoes and bicycle tires going back and forth. Now I carry an entire library of my precious books in my pocketbook... On my Kindle... And on my iPad.

Originally published in 1896. Available for FREE on Manybooks.net. As a former puffer, I'm almost afraid to read it. I don't know if enough years have passed for me to see any humor in the act of quitting. I'm still just happy I can see someone light up without wanting one myself. It's a lovely feeling!

J.M. Barrie is the Scottish writer who captures children's hearts worldwide with the memorable Peter Pan.

This book, entitled My Lady Nicotine is humorous as well, though in a very different ways. A collection of hilarious tales concerning one man's attempts to giving up smoking. It includes tales of these attempts, and his general meditations and observations on smoking. They teach through humor, satire and parody, shunning the moralizing anti-smoking polemic of our day, which is not nearly as effective as humor. "I am much better without tobacco, and already have difficulty in sympathizing with the man I used to be," Barrie says on the opening pages. The tale of his struggle follows.
