Kindle Skills - Multitasking

I don't know how it happens sometimes, but I have caught myself more and more lately with several books on my Kindle going at the same time. The worst part is, they are still making sense. I never used to be able to do that before! I was a "one thing at a time" kind of gal.

One of the great things about our Kindles is how we can read a book, go on to another one, then return to any other book we have begun, knowing when we open it, it will be exactly where we left it before.  And we don't have to do a thing, other than open it and begin reading. Our places are always saved.

I love it!

I have found myself reading a lot more than I had been able to before. The Kindle is certainly easier on my eyes, and since it is no bigger than many paperbacks, it is easy to carry an entire library around at all times, no matter where I happen to be, which makes reading several books at a time a lot easier.

I have been reading a lot on my iPhone too. That is turning out to be a device I want to have close all the time now. The Internet, Audible.com (I have an app for that), Amazon and Kindle (an app for that of course) are all just a touch away. Heck, I was at a meeting not too long ago and discovered a new perfume I fell in love with, asked the gal what it was, and without even thinking, looked it up on Amazon and had it ordered and on the way to my house before the meeting was even over. Now that has to be some kind of a sin. Talk about an impulse purchase!

Reading in a car isn't a bad experience either. I don't know why either, because when I was a kid, reading in the car was a certain ticket to barf city for me. Maybe it is an age thing, because now I can lounge in the front seat or the back seat with a good book on the Kindle or iPhone (great after dark) while hubby drives (he loves it) all over the country. We do enjoy road trips, and now I have reason to love them even more.

Looking forward to 2011 and all the good things my Kindle has for me. I hope you all are having a wonderful Christmas season and are looking forward to the next year too!

Kindle Skills - checking stuff

To check to see if any of your books are still being indexed (drains the battery a little more than normally)...

From the home screen, go to Search and type a nonsense term (for example, xx or yy). If the system is done indexing books, it will display ‘No Items’. If there are still items being indexed, the Kindle will display “Indexing Still in Progress”.

Indexing happens when you add any new books. It takes a little while, but you will appreciate it when you need to find something in any one of possibly hundreds of books already on your Kindle.

If you have downloaded a lot of books, from Amazon, as well as other places, you might want to let your Kindle do its indexing at night so it will be out of the way and nice and frisky by morning.

Before going to bed at night, plug your Kindle in, leave it on, and leave it in that state for the rest of the night. Make sure WhisperNet is on in case you have any books to be downloaded or software updates to be made, giving your Kindle the ability to catch up. You will be glad you did.

Kindle Skills - Locations

Location is Everything...
The Progress Indicator is at the bottom of every item you read on your Kindle. It tells you where you are (percentage) in the book or article, and also gives you a numeric location of where you are reading, so you can easily find a particular section or reference it to your friends. Locations are the digital way to replace pages in a book. A particular location will always be the same on a Kindle book, no matter what size text the reader chooses to use or if they wish to adjust the number of words per line to make reading easier.

Flipping through the pages...
No, you can't really do that, but if you look at your progress indicator at the bottom of your Kindle book, you might (in most instances) see a bunch of little dots. These are section indicators, and you can use the right or left buttons in the 5-way controller to navigate forward or back in your book quickly. These little section indicators may take you forward a chapter at a time, or an article at a time (like in a blog). It depends on the reading material and how it was formatted. Some don't have any sections at all, and some books are very well equipped.

The 5-way controller on the Kindle 2 is a little different from the latest Kindle. The Kindle 2 is more of a toggle switch you can move up, down, left or right, then press in on it to make what you have selected happen. The 5-way controller on the latest Kindle is a flat button in the center, surrounded by slivers of buttons, one at the top, right, left and bottom. Press the buttons surrounding the center flat button to make your selections (or move forward or back from various locations in your book), then press the center button to make things happen.

Ask Mrs. Wizard - Downloading files

When I download the file to my computer, it doesn't have the open/save pop up screen. It seems to download but I am told that my computer cannot open it because it doesn't have the right program to run it on. What is the next step? I downloaded filecure but I couldn't use it because I refuse to pay for it.

Thanks so much for your Question April. Hopefully my answer here will help many others too.

I'm going to need a lot more information before I can help April... I need to know what browser you are using... is it Internet Explorer?

It could be the popup screen is coming up but you are clicking too fast and it is disappearing behind the browser window. And what exactly is the file name you are trying to open... you need to know the whole name (including the .doc or whatever at the end of the file name) so I can tell what kind of file it is and why your computer won't open it. You can't just choose something. You have to know what programs will open what.

And you don't need filecure. Sounds like it might be crap ware anyhow.

Special Note for addition on this blog: I hate software that wants you to pay for it before it will work. A lot of good software will at least give you a trial period so you can use it and decide if it is good for you or not.

All you need is to make sure you can see the file extensions (the letters after the dot in the file name, like .txt, etc) and google to search and see what software is needed to open that kind of file. I look up odd file types on google all the time, especially when someone sends me a file I'm not familiar with. If it needs special software to be purchased, I send the person a note back letting them know they need to convert the thing to something everyone can read and be happy with. I have written about the adult view for files earlier this month and a few other times on this blog, with details on how to make sure your computer can see these file extensions on a mac or pc. Everyone needs to check it out. It will make you a much stronger computer user.

I appreciate your blog and the work you put into it...so, Thanks so much!!!

I have a question that may not be Kindle specific but, I've only noticed it on my Kindle...

Why do some books I purchase on Kindle charge me sales tax but, others don't? Most books, and all other purchases from what I can tell, don't charge me sales tax but, a few have. The most recent example I have is when I purchased Brad Meltzer's Zero Game for $1.99 and was charged tax of $0.10. I've also noticed it on a few other book purchases. I live in New Mexico if that makes any difference...I'm just curious why some and not others??

Your question isn't Kindle specific, but it IS Amazon specific. I have notice sales tax on books I purchase for my Kindle on Amazon too... One of the main reasons I shop so much (and I do a LOT) at Amazon is the free 2 day shipping (I have a Prime membership) and no sales tax. I have been seeing it on Kindle books, but not on other items I purchase from Amazon. Interesting isn't it?

I thought the "rule" was if there was a store in the state you live in, and your state charges sales tax, then if you purchase the item from the "online" same store, you still have to pay sales tax. Since Amazon doesn't actually have any "stores" anywhere, no sales tax. I'm thinking our state governments have found a way to get their fingers under the lid of this cookie jar. It is certainly has been happening here in Tennessee these last several months, and apparently for you in New Mexico too... such a shame, but I doubt there is much we as consumers can do about it, unless it is to raise some serious hell with our legislators. I do believe it is a state issue, and not a national one at this time.

Kindle Skills - Recycle and Share your first generation Kindle

Go ahead and purchase that new Kindle you have been wanting since it was first available. You don't have to neglect your much loved Kindle 1 or 2. I lent my original Kindle with the original roller menu button to a dear friend of the family, a young lady who is like another daughter to us, and a voracious reader. She loved the hell out of it, and ended up getting a brand new Kindle of her own for Christmas this year. Sonya returned my original Kindle so it could be gracefully retired and on display at my house, until I find someone else who wants to "borrow" it and read books I have accumulated on my Amazon account for a while.

If you have a Kindle 1 you wish to share with someone special, this is how you tell them to access your Archives, so they can browse your already purchased books and read till they need stronger glasses.

• Make sure the Kindle is turned on, and the Internet switch is on also.
• Press the selector wheel (lower right area on the K1) and choose Content Manager by rolling the wheel until the little indicator is to the right of the words, then pressing in on the wheel to select it.
• You will see your Home screen, with a complete list of all the books you already have on that Kindle. You will also see all the books that are not on the Kindle, but have been purchased on Amazon and are being stored in the Archives.  All these books will be labeled. You will see the word Kindle under the books on the device, and the word Amazon under the books that are archived on the Amazon servers.
• Look at the bottom of this screen and you will see page numbers, giving you an idea of how many books you have stored on the Kindle and on the Amazon servers. Use the next page and prev page buttons to navigate and browse the list. 
• If you see a book on the Amazon servers you would like to have on that Kindle, scroll the wheel until the little indicator is to the right of the book in question, then press in to select it. It will be downloaded to your Kindle immediately (be sure to have the Internet button on the back switched to the on position).
• Be sure to include your USB connection cable and the wall charger that came with this older Kindle. They are different and not interchangeable with the later generations of the Kindle. If the person you share it with wants to put other books from other sources than Amazon on it, they will certainly need to be able to hook it to their computer. They will need it to charge the device too.

I will never permanently part with my beloved first Kindle, but I don't mind sharing it with someone very special! It is back home now, but I'm sure eventually I will find someone else who will appreciate the access to my special library.

Kindle Skills - Pages

Question: Where is the one place on your Kindle you will actually see pages, rather than locations?

Answer: If you have lots of books, even if you are using Collections to organize them, chances are you have a multi page Home Screen. There are two ways to navigate this Home Screen. Use the page forward and back buttons to go one page at a time forward or back or.....

Type a number using the number row on your Kindle 2 or pressing the Sym key and choosing a number. Then press in on the center button of your 5 way controller and you will instantly be transported to the specific page on your Home Screen.

When you have the Home Screen displayed on your Kindle, look at the bottom left of the screen and you will be able to see exactly which page you are on at all times.

special note: The newest Kindle (Kindle 3?) no longer has a number row on the keyboard. You can use either the Sym key to access numbers or hold down the ALT key, then, while holding down the ALT key, press any of the top row of keys for a corresponding number. Play around with it a bit and you will be more comfortable.
