OpenOffice.org for PCs and Macs
What does this have to do with Kindle? A lot, if you like saving money and having a nice office suite of programs that includes a word processor that will export files to a PDF file. A pdf file, I might add, that can be used on your Kindle.

Most everyone has received a pdf file for one reason or another. Most computers are even shipping with the latest version of the free Acrobat Reader software already installed and ready to use. A pdf file is a great way to share a file created with say, the latest version of Microsoft Word with someone who maybe has an older version. I create quite a few files with Adobe InDesign (a great layout/desktop publishing application) and save copies of my files as pdf files so anyone can see them the way they were originally created without having to spend a lot of money on the actual software used to create them.

Adobe Acrobat can be quite pricey, and is what is needed if you want to convert various office files to pdf for sharing and other things. Once purchased and installed on your computer, you can make a pdf copy of pretty much anything you create on your computer. There are other, less expensive applications, you can purchase that will do a similar job, but not quite as well as the folks who invented pdf files (Adobe). They aren't too shabby, but free is always nice, and when you can get free and great quality, it is even nicer. If you can open it with OpenOffice.org, you can export it as a pdf file.

OpenOffice.org will open any Microsoft file, including the newest versions. Once opened, you can convert the document to a pdf file by clicking the word File at the top of the main window, then the words Export as PDF. It really is that easy. Take that pdf file and put it into the Documents folder of your Kindle and you have a new "book/document" you can read on your little machine.

OpenOffice.org is a great replacement for any office suite. It is absolutely free, along with any newer versions and updates. I use it myself, and have and will continue to recommend it to everyone I help with their computers highly. It is a rather large download (about 150 Mb), but with today's fast Internet connections, doesn't seem to be an issue for more and more people. If you are one of the lucky ones with high speed Internet, go for it! It will become your new best friend.

A very special Thank YOU to all of you who have been reading From The Desk Of Mrs. Wizard since I began sharing my thoughts, tips and free ebooks in February. Your Kindle has a very nice connection to the Internet, any time you need one. It can get on the Internet when no one else can (it seems sometimes). If you are in a car, or doctor's office, you may have special web sites you want to keep up with. Instead of typing in the URL (web address), bookmark your favorite pages for viewing any time you want.

Go to the web site

• With your Kindle on the Home page, type the web address you want to go to (mobile.allrecipes.com - no need to type the http:// stuff). 
• Toggle your 5-way switch to the right until the words go to are highlighted. 
• Press in on the 5-way switch to make it happen.
• When you arrive at the web site, press the Menu button on your Kindle.

New iPhone

Wow! I had to replace my old cell phone two days ago and ended up with a new iPhone, thanks to a very generous husband. This thing is connected to the Internet all the time, and that means it will be connected to me all the time.

Of course the first app I installed was the Kindle app so I would have access to my Amazon library. Then I installed the app for Barnes and Noble, and the ereader.com app, and Stanza. Every one of these places have access to free books. I prefer purchasing at Amazon, but if someone else has what I want for less in the ebook flavor, I would certainly consider them. It hasn't happened yet, but it could I suppose.

I knew within the first hour I was going to have this new little machine close to me all the time, so I made arrangements for my daughter to take custody of my 2 year old iTouch (an iPhone without the phone part). She is pretty excited about that and I'm happy it won't be neglected. It has been (and still is) a great little machine. It has the Kindle app with my account already on it, so she will be able to have access to my library too. I love sharing books with her.

When I was a kid, my mother used to accuse me of having a book in my face all the time. I never thought I would repeat this, but... The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I love this time we are living in!

This is to prevent spam, and works very well. Your email address (log-in email address) associated with your Amazon account is automatically listed as an approved email address. If you are like me, and often use multiple email addresses. You can add other email addresses to the approved list in the Manage Your Kindle area. This way, no matter where you are or what email you are using, you can send your Amazon account a file to convert for your Kindle.

Experiment
Practice sending a few files to your @free.kindle.com or if you don't mind paying a little, your @kindle.com email address. It is a great way to see what an actual converted file looks like, and how it will look on your Kindle when all is said and done.

That Kindle Email address
You can have a personal file converted quickly and easily by attaching it to an email and sending it to your Kindle email address. This is a special email address that was "assigned" to your Kindle when you purchased it.  It is only to be used to send personal files to so Amazon can convert them to Kindle format for you. You can see it in the Manage your Kindle area on Amazon.

Think of it as a personal email address for your Kindle that only you (or someone you approve) can send stuff to... an incoming only email address.

Your Kindle will be listed in the Your Kindle(s) area. If you have multiple Kindles, they will be listed with a different assigned email address to the right of each. Click the words Edit Info to change the names, or front part of the email address for each. You cannot change the @kindle.com part of the email addresses, but you can change the first part of the email addresses, as long as they are unique to your kindle account. For example, I tried to change the email address on my Kindle 1 to our daughter's name, but there was apparently another Kelly with a Kindle on Amazon. No problem... I just named it something else.

To lock in your changes, select Update Information to save and close the email change box.

When you send a file to your Kindle's email address, Amazon will convert it to something your Kindle can read, then send it via whispernet to your little machine. There is a small fee for this.


Fees for transfer of personal documents to the Kindle via Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted (before compression if you use a .zip file), your country, and where you're accessing Whispernet. Fees will only be charged for documents that are successfully received wirelessly to your Kindle. (Personal Document Service is not available via Whispernet in Canada. Please see Sending Personal Documents to Kindle for information about e-mailing personal documents to your computer for USB transfer to your Kindle.)

From Amazon (as of May 9, 2010):

• Kindle (U.S. Wireless) user: We'll send personal documents to your Kindle via Whispernet while inside the U.S. wireless coverage area for a fee of $.15 per megabyte.
  
• Kindle (Global Wireless) user living in the United States: If you transfer personal documents to your Kindle via Whispernet while inside the United States, the fee is $ .15 per megabyte. When traveling outside the United States, a fee of $.99 per megabyte will apply.
  
• Kindle (Global Wireless) user living outside the United States: We'll send personal files to your Kindle via Whispernet for a fee of $ .99 (USD) per megabyte anywhere in the world you access Whispernet service.

Fees are rounded up to the next whole MB and apply to each personal document delivered via Whispernet to each Kindle.

Want to send documents for FREE?

You actually have two email addresses you can use for your Kindle. If you send the same attachment to your Kindle email, but change the @kindle.com to @free.kindle.com. The document will still be converted, but will be emailed to your computer to the email address associated with your Amazon.com log-in. Once you receive that file, you can then transfer it to your Kindle by connecting it to your computer with the USB cable. Not bad huh?  For example... if you send a file to your kindle email address (yourself@kindle.com) it will cost you a tiny bit, but the file will be sent directly to your Kindle via Whispernet. The next time you turn your Kindle on, your file will be there, just like any ordered book.  If you send a file to yourself@free.kindle.com, the file will be converted for FREE, then sent as a file attachment to the email address you have as part of your Amazon.com log-in. Then you can download that attachment and send it to your Kindle via your USB cable. Either way, it is a great way to have your files converted.

What kind of files can you send?
RTF, DOC, TXT, and HTML files are files Amazon can convert easily. PDF and the newer DOCX files from MS Word are a bit iffy. My advice is to keep your document as simple as possible, and stick with the older .doc format or .txt files. You are more likely to have a better final Kindle file if you use these formats.

Search within a book
Take advantage of Kindle's search capabilities with books you need to refer to often. With the book open on your Kindle, type what you are looking for, then toggle the five-way switch to the word find, then press in on the 5-way switch. Depending on the words you used as your search term, you should have from one to many choices within just a few seconds. Toggle the 5-way switch to the one you want to see, then press in to view it. Use the back button to go back to the search results any time.

This is really handy if you have created a list of contacts or recipes, or any other kind of list. It doesn't matter how long the list is. Once it is on your Kindle, you can search it for specific words. Imagine just a few seconds to find someone's phone number, or the address and phone number of your doctor or dentist. Having a contact list on my Kindle has come in handy many times when I needed information quickly.

To each his own Search
Type what you are looking for and toggle the switch to:

• find: searches the currently open book or document
• my items: searches all books and documents currently on your Kindle
• store: searches the Kindle store
• google: takes you to the Internet for a Google search
• wikipedia: Internet search in Wikipedia (internet encyclopedia)
• dictionary: searches the dictionary on your Kindle

Remember: you can press the Back button to return to what you were doing any time.

New Kindle software update news
One of the new features we can expect on our Kindles once they are updated (through the magic of Whispernet and Amazon - version 2.5 sometime in May) is the ability to password protect it when you aren't using it. That will certainly be valuable to me, since I like to keep my special passwords file on my Kindle and it will be nice to know if I lose it (Heaven forbid), someone won't be able to view any of my books, much less my special file. So far, I always know where my Kindle is and if the unthinkable should happen, any thief would have to pry my Kindle from my cold dead hands.

Make a Kindle Shortcut
Streamline copying your books to your Kindle Documents folder (when it is connected of course) by creating a Shortcut to it in your right click and Sendto menu option.

Normally, when you hook the Kindle to a computer (PC) via a USB cable, a little window will appear asking if you want to view the contents using Windows Explorer. Answer yes, and you can get to your Kindle Documents folder that way and drag files directly to it.

Make it a little easier if you put a shortcut to the Kindle Documents folder in your Sendto menu. This will allow you to right click any Kindle ready book file and choose Sendto, then click your shortcut directly to your Kindle Documents folder (two clicks instead of clicking and dragging). You might want to name this shortcut KindleDocs so you can distinguish it from another shortcut to your Kindle when you choose Sendto. This appears when your Kindle is connected and is a shortcut to the main Kindle root directory (not your Documents folder). It happens because your computer is thinking it is an external drive when you have it connected.

Special Note: If you feel the least uncomfortable following these directions, don't do it. Send me an email and I will help if I can. You have been gently warned.

Two steps will get it done

• Make a shortcut to your Kindle Documents folder.
  1. Connect your Kindle with the USB cable to your computer.
  2. When the AutoPlay window appears, choose Open folder to view files
  3. While holding down the Alt key on your keyboard (this is really important), drag the documents folder from your Kindle window to your Desktop so you can find it easily. You should end up with a Shortcut to your documents folder on your Kindle. If you don't see an arrow on your desktop shortcut, put it back. Make sure you do NOT accidentally move the folder from your Kindle. You only want a shortcut. The original folder should still be on your Kindle.
  4. Close your Kindle window. Right click on the shortcut on your desktop and choose rename. Rename it to something like KindleDocs.
  5. Test your shortcut by double clicking it. Your Documents folder on your Kindle should open.
  
• Put the shortcut into your Sendto menu folder.
  1. Click the Start button (bottom left on your main computer screen)
  2. Click once (so you see a blinking cursor indicating you can type something) and type shell:sendto in the Start Search box. (Windows XP, click Start, then Run, and type in the Run box)
  3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  4. Your SendTo window will appear with the contents in the right pane. Left click and drag your Kindle shortcut to where the rest of the shortcuts in this folder are. It will be moved (not copied). If you are afraid to drag, you can also right click on the shortcut and choose Cut. Then right click inside the Sendto folder and choose Paste. This will do the same thing.
  5. Close the SendTo window and test your handiwork by right clicking any book file. One of your options (a new one) will be your brand new shortcut to your KindleDocs folder. Remember, this option will only work if your Kindle is connected via USB.

In the Future:

You won't have to click Open folder to view files when you connect your Kindle. You won't have to drag from one folder to another (risking a miss and having to find something that got dropped into the wrong folder. You will be able to connect your Kindle with the USB cable, then right click on the book file you want to send to it, choose Send To and choose your KindleDocs folder. Two clicks and you will be done!

Multiple pages? Press the number on the keypad, then press in on the 5-way switch to go to that page in your Home screen area instantly.

Go straight to the web with Google? Type in anything you want to search for, then toggle the 5-way switch to the right until Google is highlighted. Press in  on the 5-way and you are as good as there. Google and Wiki search abilities on the Kindle is like having the ultimate reference library at your fingertips at all times.

Gmail tip:
On the Kindle, use the 5-way switch to toggle to different areas on a web page, or within gmail. When you come to what you want, press in on the 5-way. It acts like an enter button. If you use Gmail on your Kindle, sign in and you will find your gmail calendar is available too. It is great to have it handy wherever you are. If you haven't used the calendar with gmail, you must check it out. At the top of your main Gmail screen you will find it on the left. Click it and see all the neat ways it will help you stay organized. If you use it for appointments and meetings, it will send you an email reminder a day (or hours, depending on how you set it up) before. Amazing and FREE!

Muri Pond is taking her two children, Nova and Tru, home to her father's home in the desert area of Oregon after the loss of her job and the end of her marriage. To change the size of the text, press the Aa key on your Kindle keyboard. This is the first key to the right of the space bar on the bottom row. Use your 5-way switch to toggle to the size text you want. As each text size is underlined, you will have a live view of how it will look with your book.

You can make your books easier to read without changing the text size on your Kindle.
Press Shift (the up arrow - bottom row far left) + the Alt key. Then while holding those two keys down, press a number from 1 to 9 and you will see the line spacing change on your Kindle book. Sometimes you don't really need a larger text size, changing the line spacing is just the thing.
