Kindle Skills - Mp3 Player

Your Kindle can do double duty as a very nice Mp3 player...

Put your Mp3 music files into the music folder on your Kindle. You can't really control this folder or sort the files (other than by file name) to play in any special order, but this folder is great for your favorite music files.

Use these keyboard commands to play your music:
  • Alt+F Next file
  • Alt+P Play/stop (Kindle 1)
  • Alt+Spacebar (Kindle DX, 2 and 3) play/pause music. Also pauses Text to Speech function
  • Spacebar pause audio file

Listen to your favorite music in the background as you read using either the built in speakers on your Kindle, or plug in your ear buds for more private listening.

Where to get music files...
  • You can purchase music from Amazon.com one song at a time (in an mp3 file) or an entire album of mp3 files.
  • You may even have friends who have amazing music collections (mp3 files) and don't mind sharing.
  • You can take your personal CD collection and "rip" songs from each CD and save them as mp3 files for you to use on your Kindle or mp3 player. My favorite software for this sort of thing is from Acoustica.comMP3 CD Burner is one of my favorite applications for music files. My husband has fallen in love with it too, and has combined hundreds of songs from various CDs of ours into one cd. We use these MP3 CDs when we go on road trips. The newer CD players will play mp3 cds, and the neat thing is you can get hundreds of mp3 files on a recordable cd, but only a handful of traditional music files will fit on the old fashioned type cd.
File Management:
  • Music file types the Kindle can handle are .mp3. You can get them just about anywhere, including Amazon.
  • Connect your Kindle to your computer with the USB cable
  • Mac - When the Kindle icon appears on your desktop, double click it to see the folders inside.
  • PC - When the little popup box appears asking what you want to do with what you just plugged into your computer, chooseview files using Windows Explorer
  • Drag the files to the audible or music folder. They won't do you a bit of good anywhere else.
  • Disconnect your Kindle and enjoy! Be sure to use the Safely remove option (eject) for the PC or drag the Kindle icon to the trash if you have a Mac before you disconnect the usb cable.

Kindle Skills - Grazing Free

Great Places to find free books for your Kindle

On the Internet:
Manybooks.net (one of my personal favorites)
Inkmesh.com keeps track of a free ebooks from several sources. It is fun to check in with every now and then.
FreeKindleBooks.org is sort of an mishmash of other places to find more goodies. Certainly it is worth a look.

On Amazon:
The best place to start is with a search on Amazon using the words free book collections. You will be taken to a special collections area on Amazon that practically holds your hand and directs you to the latest and greatest in FREE out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books and free limited-time promotional offers for your Kindle.

You can also find a link to the Free eBook Collections by going to the Kindle Store part of Amazon, then clicking the link toKindle eBooks in the top row of links right under the search box. Once you are in the Kindle eBooks area, look in the far left column under Special Features and you will see the link to Free eBook Collections toward the bottom of that list.

Scroll down a bit and look for a link to Limited-time Promotional Offers or Kindle Popular Classics. Click either link, then browse for a title just like any other Kindle book. Once you get to the search results page, look toward the top of the list and to the right for the sorting choices. Click the little down arrow to the right of the Sort by box and choose Price: Low to High. This will insure the free offerings are listed first.

Now THIS is BROWSING!

Genre Searching:
Go to the Kindle Store on Amazon, look in the left column and scroll down until you see the Kindle eBooks list. You will see it sectioned off by genres like Fiction, Nonfiction, Advice & How-To, etc. Pick any one you want to browse by clicking on it once. Romance is a goodie to practice with. You will see your browser page change to the Romance section of the Kindle store, with a further break down in the far left column under the word Browse. Click the word Historical and the page will change to another search results page. At the top left you will see the words Showing 1-12 of 7,708 results. Look to the right of those words and click the down arrow to the right of the sort box and choose Price: Low to High

Happy Grazing!

Kindle Skills - Image Burn

It's an E-Ink thing I think...
Sometimes when you have the same screen on for too long on your Kindle, the screen will appear to leave little traces of words or images. If you see anything like this, you can "fix" it by refreshing the screen.

While holding down the Alt key, press the letter G on your Kindle keyboard.

Voila!

Kindle Skills - Games

You can learn a lot from some of these games, and when you see how inexpensive they can be... well see for yourself.

Go to Amazon.com, click the down arrow next to Shop all Departments, move your mouse pointer down and let it hover over the word Kindle, move the pointer to the right and down, then click the words Kindle Store. When you get to the Kindle Store, scroll down until you see the games area. You will be amazed at what you can pick up for very little $$. Be sure to look through the far right column too... especially in the FREE list. You will find a few games there too...

Enjoy!

Special Thanks to David ("Me and My Kindle" blog) for letting me know about this. Such a sweetie!

Kindle Skills - Share Yours

One of my favorite things to do is help someone over the phone while being able to see their computer screen at the same time. It is so much easier when you can actually see the same thing they are looking at.

One of the tools I use is Crossloop (http://crossloop.com). It is free, and very easy and secure to use on both ends. Unfortunately, the person you are helping has to actually install the software and sign up for a user id and password in order for you to be able to help them.

Recently I found something even easier to use in a pinch. The next time you would like to help someone, go to http://join.me. Have them go there with their browser too... It is so easy and straightforward, you will be helping in no time at all!  You don't have to have any special skills, the person you are helping will "share" their screen with you by giving you a number you will type into your browser window. Once you are connected, you can see what is going on and help in a way you never thought possible.

I am finding myself using it more and more. I love things that don't waste brain cells!
