Free on Amazon Today

How about a nice little word game? And a few more that are still free?
Note: If you are reading this on your Kindle and want to get a book from the Kindle store now, type the title with your Kindle, then toggle your 5-way switch to the right until the word store is highlighted. Press in on it to search. When the title comes up, use the 5-way toggle switch to move around the book info area to read more about the book. Make sure it is still free (or an acceptable price) before finally pressing in on the 5-way switch to "buy" it. You can always press the back button (before you press buy) if you change your mind.

And remember... what is FREE today may not be FREE tomorrow, so get it while you can!

Kindle Skills - Keyboard Shortcuts Updated

There are some additions at the bottom of this list. I thought it might not hurt to just post the whole thing again so you could have it nice and handy... and current.

Enjoy!

The Ultimate list (So Far)

General Shortcuts
•Alt+G refresh screen (anti-ghosting)
•Alt+Shift+R reboot Kindle (completely shuts down, then restarts) - Kindle 1 only
•Alt+Shift+G screenshot

•Reset - Kindle 2 and newer:  slide and hold the power button for 15 seconds
•Display Wireless Network newer Kindles - Press Menu button

•J (letter key) when Font choices are open (Aa), pressing the letter J will give you additional justification options. Kindle 1 only. I did not see additional options on the DX or Kindle 3 while a book was opened and the Aa key was pressed.

Photo Viewer Controls - The picture viewer can be activated by connecting your Kindle 2 (and newer) to your computer and creating a "pictures" folder on your Kindle drive. Create subfolders inside the pictures folders with each subfolder naming what the subject of the pictures are. The subfolders will become "book" names and the pictures will be pages. .gif, .jpg and .png files all work. Then disconnect the USB cable and when you turn on your Kindle and press Alt+Z on the home screen, your pictures will appear among the books.

•The letter C toggles the actual size

Settings Page (from the Home screen, press Menu, then navigate to settings) Kindles 2, 3 and DX
•Alt+411 Show diagnostics data (while holding down the alt key, press the numbers one at a time)
•Alt+311 search for and switch wireless provider (do not do this unless you know exactly what you are doing).

the music folder on your Kindle)
•Place mp3 files (book, music, old time radio shows) in this folder on your Kindle. When you disconnect your Kindle from the computer, you will see these files listed much like any other book. These have special "powers." You can organize them in collections. Click one to play
and you will see regular audio controls at the bottom of your Kindle screen. Use the spacebar to start/stop or use the 5 way controller to navigate to the control you want to use, then press in on the center to make it happen.

Searching
To copy text from a book to the search box (to search for a character's name?)
  • Use the 5-way to position the cursor to the beginning of the text you want to copy

  • Use the 5-way to move right, selecting (highlighting) the word(s) you want to search for
  • Instead of clicking again as you would to save a highlight, press the spacebar
  • The selected words will now be in the search box. Move the cursor down or right, delete any extra characters, then move down and right to highlight Find. Click to search
  • Clear text from the search/edit box: ALT+DEL
  • Default search action: when the action on the right of the search box is the one you want, you do not have to use the 5-way to move to highlight it first. You can just press ENTER (or click)
  • Same thing if the cursor is in the URL field of the web browser on your kindle. the action shown to the right is going to be the default. You can just press ENTER to make it happen.
The SYM key is only active when a search/edit box is active
  • To start a search from the Home screen with a symbol, press DEL or ENTER to open up a search box, then press SYM
  • On some other screens, DEL or ENTER will not work. To open a search/edit box so you can use SYM, type a space, then delete it.

Kindle Skills - Password Protect Your Kindle

updated from March, 2010

Yes, you can password protect your Kindle if you have the latest update. Here's how you can tell if you have the capability:
  • With the Kindle on the Home screen, press the Menu button
  • Scroll down (with the 5-way switch) to Settings and press in to select
  • In the Settings screen, you should see Device Password at the bottom of the list. Scroll down until the words turn on is underlined (selected) and press in on the 5-way switch to select
  • Set Password dialog will appear. Enter the password you want to use, Type it again to confirm it.
  • Enter a password hint to help you remember it
  • Select Submit when finished
password notes: Once you have your password created, your Kindle will be protected. No one will be able to use your Kindle without entering the correct password. This includes you, so don't use the password feature if you have memory issues. If you forget your password, the only remedy is to reset your Kindle, which will also remove all content to prevent other people from accessing it. Not pretty.

If you forget your password, move the 5-way controller down to view your password hint. Your Kindle will also give you the Kindle Support phone number so customer service can help reset your Kindle password.

Change your mind? If you have not forgotten your password and want to change it or turn it off, navigate to the Settings menu again. When you get to the Device Password area, you will see the option to turn off the password. Of course you need to be signed onto your Kindle with your password, and you will need to enter your password in order to confirm and turn off the Device Password option. I believe the keywords here are not and forgotten.

If you lose your Kindle and you don't have it password protected, you can always go to your Amazon account on the web andDeregister your Kindle. This will divorce it from your account so whoever has it won't be able to purchase any new books. Unfortunately, they will have access to any books you already have on your Kindle. If you want, you can contact Amazon Customer Support and (I think) they can really render it useless. Click the word Help at the top right of the account area on Amazon. Navigate to the Kindle help area and look for a Contact Us button. It should be in the Self Service area on the right side of the web page. Amazon will phone you immediately. They are an amazing help resource.

Kindle Skills - Back Up Your Stuff

Organize Your Library

Create a folder
Begin by creating a new folder on your Desktop (your main computer screen). Hopefully it isn't too crowded and you can find an empty area to right click with your mouse and choose the words New Folder. You will see a new folder appear with the words New Folder all nice and highlighted. Immediately begin typing the name you want to use for your new book collection folder. Once you have that done, you can left click anywhere else on your main screen to lock in your changes. To open your new folder, double click it. You can create other folders inside this folder if you want to organize your new books even more. You can even add folders as you go along, and as you need them. There is no perfect way to organize your folders. My advice is to organize your folders so YOU are comfortable knowing where everything is. That's why they call it a Personal Computer after all. It is your stuff, and your rules.

Where to keep your books?
If you are a bibliophile, like I am, keep your folder on your Desktop, in front of your face at all times so you can pour through the contents any time you want. If you prefer, drag this folder to your Documents folder and let it take its place in that list of folders and files. Wherever you finally decide to put it, make sure you can easily find it, because this is where all the books you download and save are going to go in the future. It is much easier when you have everything in one place. This will make backing up a breeze too. Right click on the folder any time and choose Send To, and send a copy to a blank CD or a thumb drive, anything you choose. There is comfort in knowing you have a copy of this folder (and any other personal files that may mean something to you) somewhere else in addition to your main computer. Don't be one who has to learn about Mr. Backup the hard way. It isn't pretty.

Drag Files to Folder
When you download your book files, you can choose to download them directly to your folder, or download them to your Desktop, then left click and drag them to your book folder. When you let go of the left mouse button, they will be there.

Different Folder Views
When you have your book folder open, move your mouse pointer to the top of the folder window for the word View, and look for the word Details (Windows XP). In Windows 7 or Vista, look for an additional Views button to click in the toolbar. You can choose the word Details with that too. When you find it, click on the different view choices for the folder to see each. I personally like the Details view because it lines up the files alphabetically by file name. You can left click each column header to sort each column any way you like.

Ask Mrs. Wizard - USB Device Mode

Q: Hi,
A friend just bought me a Kindle. After learning that I could not check out book from the library with it, I was a bit disappointed as I am on a fixed income. So when I learned about your site and manybooks.net, I figured I could still use this new device. I was able to download a book from manybooks.net to my desktop. However, when I plug in my Kindle to the computer, a screen comes onto it that says USB Device Mode - if you'd like to read or shop on your Kindle while continue to charge over USB, please keep the USB cable attached, but eject your Kindle from your computer. I can't not get out of this screen mode at all - the page forward, home, menu, back, etc buttons do not allow the screen to change. I even tried copying my file into the kindle file on the computer - which it let me do - but I don't know how to get that to the actual Kindle. If you could help me get over this hump, I would be grateful and feel like this was a worthwhile purchase for my friend. Thanks so much!

A: You are going to love your Kindle... especially when you find out how to get to all the free books on Amazon

When your Kindle is connected to your computer via the usb cable, it can only charge and let you transfer books to it (it sort of becomes an external hard drive). You can use it normally while it is connected and charging but you have to "eject" it from your computer first...

If you are on a Mac... drag the kindle icon to the trash. This will allow you to continue to use your Kindle normally while it charges. Then just disconnect the usb when it is charged.

If you are on a PC... you need to open "my computer" or "computer," right click on the Kindle drive and choose "eject"... that will put your kindle screen back to normal so you can use it while it charges... then you can disconnect from the usb when it is fully charged.

I hope you enjoy your new little machine!
Another thought... before you disconnect your Kindle... When transferring files to your Kindle, make sure the ONLY place you put the book files you download on your Kindle is in the Documents folder on that Kindle. Then, when you disconnect your Kindle from the USB, you will be able to find it on your Home screen when you turn your Kindle back on.

Warmest Regards,
Cindy O'Neal (Mrs. Wizard)

Kindle Skills - Audio Books

Use the audible folder for more control...
audible folder (audio books from audible.com or mp3 audio books or mp3 music files)

This is for audible.com files (subscription required) but also for mp3 files you may want more control over (rather than just putting them in the music folder on your Kindle)
Place mp3 files (book, music, old time radio shows) in this folder on your Kindle. When you disconnect your Kindle from the computer, you will see these files listed much like any other book. These have special "powers." You can organize them in collections. Click one to play and you will see regular audio controls at the bottom of your Kindle screen. Use the spacebar to start/stop or use the 5 way controller to navigate to the control you want to use, then press in on the center to make it happen.

The Kindle... not just for reading with your eyes
I love audio books. There was a time when my eyes had gotten so bad, my reading ability was pretty much gone. I was heartbroken at first. I couldn't stand the thought of not being able to read again. I tried a few audiobooks and at first, just couldn't enjoy them.... short attention span, easily distracted, and felt nailed to a chair when I tried to listen to a book. I eventually fell in love with them when I discovered I could combine a 3 mile health walk with a great book. It was amazing! There is nothing that can compare with having some of the Mark Twain classics read to you by a real Southerner... or a horror novel read to you by the author himself (Stephen King).

If you are going on a trip and will have your Kindle close by, it might be a great time for you to check out Audible.com and sample a few audio books yourself. Your Kindle will handle Audible files just fine, as well as Mp3 files you find elsewhere.  Make use of the special folder on your Kindle for Audible files. You just need to download them and transfer them to that folder on your Kindle via the USB cable that came with it.

    Ask Mrs. Wizard:
Please send me a personal email (mrswizard@mrswizard.com) if you have any questions. I answer all my emails and am more than happy to help any time I can. Your questions mean a lot to me, and may even inspire an article that will help others and make this a more valuable resource to anyone who reads it.
