Kindle Skills - Dictionary Lookups

Definitions with the built in dictionary:
Oh yes... it is built right into your Kindle and as easy to get to as toggling the cursor to the left of the word  you want to define with the up, down, left and right buttons around the 5-way controller.

As soon as you get the cursor to the left of a word, you will see a mini definition at the bottom of your screen. Press in on the center button in the 5-way controller to see a more detailed definition.

Press the Back button to return to your reading when you are finished reading the definition. I love the Back button. It will take you back to your book no matter where you are, including the Kindle store.

Ask Mrs. Wizard:
Please send me a personal email (mrswizard@mrswizard.com) if you have any questions. I answer all my emails and am more than happy to help any time I can. Your questions mean a lot to me, and may even inspire an article that will help others and make this a more valuable resource to anyone who reads it.

Kindle Skills - Define It

July 14, 2010 Cindy O'Neal

Quick Look Up...
You may already know you can get the definition of any word in a book you are reading by toggling the 5-way switch down, or to the left or right, until the blinking cursor is to the left of the word in question. You will then see the beginning of the definition appear at the bottom of your Kindle screen. If that isn't enough for you and you want to read more, press the little crooked arrow (pointing to the left) just below the DEL key on your Kindle keyboard and you will be taken to another screen to read more on the definition.

What if you just want a quick definition for a word ... just a random word, not in a particular book you are reading? Say someone tosses you a challenge? Well read on kiddies...

Just type the word you want defined, if you have a book opened or are on the Home screen of your Kindle. Once you have the word typed, toggle your 5-way switch to the right until dictionary is highlighted. Then press in on the 5-way switch to make something happen. You will see your word appear again with the words search dictionary to the right. Toggle to the right and press in on the 5-way switch again. Now you will see a list of closely spelled words. Press in on the 5-way again and the definition page will appear with probably more than you ever need to know about that particular word. If you can spell it, you can find it!

When you are finished in Dictionary Land, press the Back button to return to your reading.

Enjoy!

Dictionary at your fingertips

Originally posted February 24, 2010 by Cindy O'Neal

Yep... it sure is... and it makes your Kindle that much more valuable. You might even stretch yourself a bit with the books you choose knowing you have a quick and easy way to look up anything you might not be familiar with.

To look up a word, use your toggle switch (5 way controller) to place the cursor immediately to the left of the word in question. Push it up or down, or to the left or right. The moment you begin manipulating the switch, you will see the cursor.

Once you have the cursor where you want it, the definition will appear. If you need to see more, press the little down arrow button (last button on the right, 4th row).

When you are finished reading the definition, press the Back button to continue reading where you left off.

You're going to be soooooo smart!
