You can read more and download Calibre at http://calibre-ebook.com/. There is a version for Windows, Mac (OS X), as well as Linux computers. Every day you use it you will wonder what on earth you ever did without it.
Calibre is a great Open Source, absolutely free to use and share application for your PC or Mac. If you download ebooks from places other than Amazon or have ever had to deal with the various other ebook formats (not Amazon .azw files), Calibre could become your new best friend. Once you turn a few search engines loose, you will be amazed how many places there are to find good DRM-free (digital rights management-free) books to add to your Kindle library. Manybooks.net, feedbooks.com, gutenberg.org and inkmesh.com are four of my favorites.
Calibre will open many different ebook file types, some the Kindle won't touch, and Calibre can convert those for you quickly and easily to a Kindle friendly format. The help area on the Calibre site includes a step by step guide to converting html and Microsoft Word format files using Calibre. These are the types of files you may be likely to use for personal files you might want to use on your Kindle. Calibre is a great tool for taking a personal file and making it perfectly readable on your Kindle.
Calibre knows when you have a Kindle hooked up to your computer (mac or pc) so transferring your files to your Kindle is as simple as clicking the Send to device button. Kindle related buttons only appear when your Kindle is connected. When your Kindle is connected, you will also see little green check marks next to any books Calibre has sent to it before.

2 Free Games for your Kindle

But if you like word games, type in these titles with your Kindle:
Shuffled Row
Every Word
Toggle your 5-way switch to the right until the word Store is highlighted. Press in to make the search happen. Look for the words in parentheses (A Free Game for Kindle, Kindle Active Content) in the title.

Series Books At Your Fingertips
Why most series books don't have the series position in the title (easily visible on your Kindle Home page) I will never understand. When I find a great book and discover it is part of a series, naturally I want to read them all... in order of course. It isn't hard to find the correct order. Google is a great resource for information like that. It may be a wiki article, or the author's website, but the information is out there.
My daughter (Kelly) and I took advantage of the last two Melody Carlson freebies, and quickly realized they were only the first two in a series. Mixed Bags and Stealing Bradford are still free as of this writing if you haven't already picked them up. Just do a search with your Kindle for the titles, and if they are still free or you approve of the price, "purchase" them and they will be delivered to you immediately.
At any rate, once I found the correct order for the remaining books, remembering which was which was a bugger. Here's what I did to fix that... and any little similar dilemmas in the future. I created a simple text file, with the series books listed and numbered in order. There are several other series I have in my "to be read" list, so this little text file will really come in handy. I now have that text file on my Kindle, listed on the home screen as a "book" titled Series Books. And that fixed that!
You can do this too if you like. Create a simple text file. If you use a word processor, be sure to save your file as a text (.txt) file. Put that file in the Documents folder on your Kindle. If you are using the Collections feature, you can move that "book" to any collection on your Kindle. I have one named "mine" to indicate personal files.

About the New Kindle

A few tidbits:
USB connector is a Mini-B - same as on the Kindle 2 (Thank GOD). So if you have both, the USB cables will be interchangeable.... That means you can lose one and still be oTay!
WiFi capable - This means you will be able to automatically connect to your home wireless network with your Kindle. If you don't have a home wireless network, your wireless capabilities will kick in if you travel... hotels, BigMac Land, lots of places offer free wifi. Why is this good? If you can switch to wifi when available, the connection is much faster than the 3G. The 3G service is great ... but still a little clunky. It is nice to have both in the same device because more than likely, if you can't use one, the other should be available.
Size: The new kid on the block is noticeably smaller than the Kindle 2. This means Oberon Design is going to get a few more $$ from me as soon as I decide to get this new model. I love what their covers do for my Kindles... takes me to a different time and place. You will understand if you ever add an Oberon cover to your Kindle.
No number row: Instead of using the Alt key to access a double duty row of keys for the numbers, you will use the SYM key to select numbers in addition to punctuation and symbols. Press the SYM key again to dismiss the menu.
Capacity: About 4Gb (only 3 GB is available to the user though). Trust me... You can get a LOT of books in 4 gig of space, not to mention audible audio books, music files... ohmygod!
Even though the size is smaller, the display size (and that is what counts) is the same 6".

Kindle 3 coming soon! And a couple of freebies

OK... I admit I have been drooling since the news and pictures of the latest Kindle appeared at Amazon. It is a beauty, and I love the idea of it being able to tap into a nice fast wifi connection when available. Combine that with a smaller size without a smaller screen and it is definitely a winner.
Now what to do with my perfectly good Kindle 2 with its (very expensive) Oberon hand crafted leather cover. And... if I do break down and add the latest Kindle to my home, how soon before Oberon has a cover for it too? How dare they (Amazon) make something so neat and so tempting to a bibliophile?
There is even a choice of colors this time around!
AND... Here are a couple of new free offerings in the Kindle book store.

Note: If you are reading this on your Kindle and want to get a book from the Kindle store now, type the title with your Kindle, then toggle your 5-way switch to the right until the word store is highlighted. Press in on it to search. When the title comes up, use the 5-way toggle switch to move around the book info area to read more about the book. Make sure it is still free (or an acceptable price) before finally pressing in on the 5-way switch to "buy" it. You can always press the back button (before you press buy) if you change your mind.

Manybooks.net note: You can actually download these books from your Kindle, directly from the web site. It is certainly worth clicking these book links and experimenting with your 5-way toggle. It may be a little clunky, but actually works fine. You will make good use of that free Amazon whispernet connection. The .mobi file format is my personal favorite for books from Manybooks.net on my Kindle, but you can also use .prc, .txt, and .azw files with no trouble. Experiment with them all and decide for yourself which formats you like the best. Manybooks.net books are always FREE!
