Kindle Skills - Windows File Extensions

This may seem a little elementary to some, but many Kindle users aren't computer people. You don't need to know this stuff, but if you find yourself really loving that little machine of yours, this knowledge will help you get more out of it. This is one of my favorite articles in my book (Kindle Skills) and over the years one of the more important lessons I give my clients. It makes them much stronger and more confident with their computer.

The Adult View
Windows hides File Extensions by default. File Extensions are the three letters after the dot at the end of any file name and are used to let your computer know what type of file it is. For example, if it is a .jpg file, your computer knows it is an image file. If it is an .exe file, your computer knows it is a program.

If YOU can't see those file extensions, how are you supposed to know what kind of file you are looking at? Well, you could learn to identify the icons, but some files have generic icons and it is hard to tell. Set your computer up so you can see your file extensions. In Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, click the Start button. Move the mouse pointer up to Computer or My Computer (Computer in Vista and Windows 7),right click and choose Explore (choose Open - Windows 7). At the top of the next window, click the word Tools, then Folder Options. Click the View tab and scroll until you see Hide extensions for known file types. Uncheck the box to the left. Click OK and you will be able to see your extensions from now on...The Adult View.

It is very important to not change file extensions unless you have a very good reason. Changing the extension can (and usually does) make the file unusable. This means if you need to rename a file for any reason, be sure to leave the file extension part alone. Unless you have a very good reason, and you know exactly what you are doing, everything to the right of the dot is off limits. Changing a file extension could confuse your computer and cause the file to not open at all. Changing a file extension does not convert a file to whatever you want it to be. It just changes the way your computer looks at it.

Common File Extensions:

• .txt - text files
• .doc - Word Document
• .rtf - Rich Text format (a little fancier than plain text)
• .jpg - image file (could be a photo)

File types (extensions) your Kindle likes:

• .azw (native Kindle file)
• .txt
• .mobi
• .prc
• .pdb
• .pdf (not as pretty as it would be on your computer screen, but viewable)

Kindle Skills - Let Your Kindle Read To You

I just received the sweetest phone call from a dear friend of our daughter. This girl is like our own too and we love her dearly.

Sonya is on a beach in sunny southern California reading her Kindle. She is on her tummy and her backside is getting a little fried. She called to tell me she wanted to turn over and cook the other side and didn't I say her Kindle could "read" to her? This way she can turn over and listen to the book instead of having to hold it up and continue reading while on her back. You know how heavy those Kindles can get when you are lying on your back on a beach in California (hehehe).

What you need to do when you want your Kindle to read to you is this:

• Make sure the book is open and on the page you are reading.
• Press the Aa key to open the text options. (one of those options is text to speech)
• If Text to Speech is available, it will be black. You can press the 5-way down until it is underlined.
• Press in on the 5 way to turn on Text to Speech.
• Plug in a nice set of ear buds into the headphone jack on the Kindle
• Listen till your front is properly fried.

You can select a female or male speaking voice.
You can select the speech rate (slower, default, faster)

California on the beach... I'm so jealous!

I don't know why all these books are available lately. It does seem like a lot to take in. I hope you are all enjoying browsing through them. I had a tendency to grab all I could at first. Now I only add titles that really interest me to my Kindle. You might also want (if you have a Kindle 2 or 3) create a special Collection just for the free books you are collecting. It is wonderful to have a nice "bank" of books at your fingertips at all times. Your Kindle can hold thousands of books before it begins to holler for mercy. It truly is like having a library in your hands... All your little buddies close... all the time!
