Kindle News - Is is just me?

Many of us Kindle lovers have been speculating for months now about the next generation of Kindles. Now they are here (or about to be here), the words iPad killer keeps coming to mind, at least over here. I can't help comparing the new Kindle Fire to my iPad, and the love/hate relationship I have had with it since I first opened the box.

• Flash (or lack thereof)... The new Kindle Fire is not going to have an issue with that at all. In fact, the Amazon Prime movies and TV series, you know... the ones we can get for free because we have an Amazon Prime account? Those movies won't play on the iPad, or iPhone, or anything other than a regular computer. It is going to be nice to have something in my hand that will access them seamlessly.
• Reading in the dark... Now that is one thing I have really enjoyed with the iPad and my iPhone. For some reason, these old eyes aren't really interested in reading on the beach. I like to curl up in a nice big chair with the news going on in the background (just in case something happens when I'm reading something hot and steamy). I like that nice bright screen, and it can be adjusted for various lighting situations. I am looking forward to the new Kindle Fire reading experience.
• Apps... I'm really looking forward to experimenting with Android apps from the Amazon store. I have been happily using apps on my iPhone and iPad for the last couple of years and have found myself saying, "There's got to be an app for that!" more often that I would have imagined. If this is going to be a first for you, you will love it! Unfortunately, the only experience I have been able to have with Android stuff has been my husband's cell phone. He's still a huge pc fan and thinks it's great, but I haven't had it in my hands long enough to get anything but anxiety from trying to help him figure things out. I know Android machines have got to be friendlier than that ugly brick he has. Uhhh... don't tell him I said ugly things about his phone....
• The size... The new Kindle Fire looks to be considerably smaller than the iPad. I'm looking forward to comparing that in person.

Kindle Skills - Before You Reset

Just the thought of a full reset on my Kindle gives me the shivers... it's what you can do when all else fails... when your Kindle is doing weird things (like locking up, or generally not doing what it should) and you just don't know what else to do.

It also erases everything on your Kindle and gives you a fresh start, if all goes well. A blank slate is not my first choice, especially if I have hundreds of books on my little machine.

Try a full shutdown and let your Kindle start up again instead. Slide the power switch to the Off position and hold it for 20 seconds (count if you have to). Release the power switch. You should see your Kindle blink and flash a bit, then turn off... then it will take its sweet time restarting.

When it comes back on, chances are very good it will have a whole new outlook on life.

Now these instructions may change for the newest Kindles when they make their appearance. I will certainly let you know if that is the case.

Kindle Skills - Lending Library

I hope you have had a chance to investigate a little further on Amazon... and are as excited as I am about one more way to read good stuff for free.

Here's how it works... Looks as though you can do it from your Kindle easily. When go to purchase a book, if it is available to borrow, you will see the option under the Buy button. Choose that button instead.

Click the Borrow for Free button to borrow the title.

The book currently being borrowed can be read on multiple Kindle devices, as long as they are registered to the same eligible account, but cannot be read on Kindle reading apps. 

One book can be borrowed at a time, and there are no due dates.  You can borrow a new book as frequently as once a month, directly on your registered Kindle device, and you will be prompted to return the book that you are currently borrowing. 

If you have already borrowed a book in that calendar month, you are not yet eligible to borrow a new book until the next calendar month.  There is no “roll-over” or accrual of unused borrowing eligibility.

Notes:

• Limited to 1 free ebook a month
• Only available for Kindles (sorry iPod/iPad and various other Kindle apps for the pc and mac). I'm not sure how this is going to work on my older Kindles and my Kindle DX. 
• Exclusively for Amazon Prime members 

Amazon Prime membership costs $79 a year. 12 free Kindle books a year certainly takes care of that cost. And when you add access to all those free movies and tv shows with your Amazon Prime account... kind of makes my heart flutter!

I just stumbled on this while browsing around on Amazon.com. It isn't a huge surprise to see Amazon has something to offer you can't get anywhere else.

The Lending Library...
If you have Amazon Prime (where you get free 2 day shipping for an annual fee), you not only now have access to thousands of FREE movies and TV series, now you have access to the Amazon Lending Library.  You can now choose from thousands of books to borrow for free including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers - as frequently as a book a month, with no due dates.

Now that's what I call interesting!  And just in time for the newest Kindles...

Kindle Tools - Mobipocket Guide

If you love grazing through endless book shelves, taking your time, generally enjoying the browsing, you might like this link.

It is a link to the Mobipocket Guide for your Kindle.

This link has all kinds of "powers."

• Download the latest list (a clickable list) of books available for your Kindle, from your device.
• It is updated daily (every 24 hours) so you can always have access to the freshest ebooks
• These books are formatted by members of the MobileRead community, and done with tender loving care. I haven't seen a poorly formatted ebook yet.
• Books not in MobiPocket format (.mobi or .prc files) are not included in the guide, so you can be sure anything you download from it will be compatible with your Kindle. It loves .prc or .mobi files.
• This guide is in the form of a .mobi book, and can be "read" right from your Kindle. 
• All the available books have links so they can be downloaded with your Kindle. Once downloaded, you can see them on your home screen and read normally.

Kindle Skills - Waiting Patiently

Sure... and if you think I am really waiting patiently for that new Kindle Fire to arrive (I pre ordered it probably on day 1), I have a bridge I would like to discuss selling.

Honestly, everything I do lately that involves my Kindle DX has me wondering how different it is going to be on the new one. I wish I could also purchase the new Kindle touch, but I can't have them all. I'll have to write about that one from what I read from others. I won't let you down, no matter what Kindle you end up with.

All of this Calibre stuff lately is going to be useful even if you get a new Kindle. Calibre is a great tool to have, and you will enjoy using it to organize your Kindle books, whether you purchased them from Amazon or got them free from other places on the Internet. There is a reason I am spending so much time with this little FREE jewel...

Over the next few days I will be introducing you to RSS Feeds, and how you can find your favorites, then command Calibre to email them to your Kindle (for a small cost), or send them straight to your Kindle when it is connected with the USB cable.

Kindle Tools - Calibre

Right click and Remove...
Use Calibre to manage your ebooks, on your computer as well as your Kindle.
If you are viewing your list of titles on your Kindle with Calibre, you can right click on any of them and choose to remove the title from your device.

If it is a book you have purchased on Amazon, there will always be a copy left on the Amazon server in your ebook archives. If it is a book you acquired elsewhere (like manybooks.net) and you delete it, it will be gone (gone gone), unless you have kept a copy either in your Calibre library, or in a folder on your computer.

If you don't have a backup, you can always go get it again... if you can remember the title?

God... Getting old is certainly not for sissies!

Kindle Helper Software - Calibre - Get Books

The Internet is a wild and wooly place, a vast untamed wilderness of all things wonderful (and not so). If you are looking for good quality, not ancient, and formatted with care for your Kindle (and other ereaders), you can get lost really fast. There is a lot to choose from and not all sites are trustworthy.

Use Calibre (you have installed it and are making friends with it by now, right?) as more than just an ebook organizer and quick reader. It has a button in the menu bar named Get books that, by clicking the little down arrow to the right of it, will give you access to quite a few places to browse, many of them free. Notice manybooks.net is one of the listed places. This is a great place for you to click and browse and get to know some of the things Calibre can make easier for you. The Stores area is where they are all listed. If you move your mouse pointer down a bit and click the words Choose Stores, you can deselect the ones you don't really need or want. I want to at least explore all the various links to these stores and will probably end up removing the ones that are in languages I can't read, or countries I can't shop in. I noticed the Amazon (US) link caused my default browser to open with the Amazon Kindle store nice and handy for me. I'm thinking if you purchase a book, have it sent to your Kindle normally, then the next time you have your Kindle connected to your computer, turn on Calibre and copy it to your Calibre library too. This list is very interesting, with most of these "store" totally new to me. I'm going to enjoy exploring!

The way this software is so frequently updated, I wouldn't be surprised to see more "stores" added as time goes by. This is certainly an area to keep an eye on if you are interested in new places for browsing reading material.
