Ask Mrs. Wizard - New Kindle

Just bought mine today. Loads of fun, think I can manage most basic tasks by day one! Except......how the heck to you get the screen to lighten for night reading? Thought I could finally do away with the little clip on book light when I read in bed!

Also, using the Kindle app on my Android; anyway to sync those to my Kindle since I already paid for them?

Debbie you are going to LOVE your new Kindle! Congratulations! And thank you for your question...

E-ink technology is what makes your Kindle screen very similar to a real book. It is very easy on the eyes for long periods of time, but you can't make it brighter and will need a book light if you want to read it at night... just like with a regular book. If I were you, I would use the Android to read on at night... like in bed and stuff. I read on my iPhone like that myself. It is very discreet and I don't have to worry about disturbing my snoring spouse (and he CAN snore!). It is great background noise when I am reading something hot and steamy. hehehe

As to syncing your Android Kindle app? Your Kindle app is tied to your Amazon account. You need to (from within the app) visit the archives on Amazon and you will find all the books you have purchased will be there. You can even read the same book on your Android (or PC, or Mac Kindle apps) and your Kindle, and whichever you are using at the time will automatically place itself at the most current page you last read, so you will never lose your place.

Hi Cindy,

I’m back again with new puzzle. Not urgent but if you could help, I would be very grateful.

I recently bought a book from Amazon: The Ingoldsby Legends.  

Now, on my hand-held Kindle, the text is disposed in such a way that it is very difficult to read, with one line going right over to the right, then line two, just one word, then line three, five or six words, say! (I’m talking about one whole sentence being cut up in this way!)  And so on.

I thought it was the fault of the conversion to digital.

But imagine my surprise in finding it quite normal in my Kindle PC version!  

Do you have any explanation for this and can you help?

I don't think it is your Kindle (hand held) at all... It is a formatting issue with the ebook itself. It sounds as though it is not wrapping properly (the text), and on the Kindle PC version you may have a larger window. Try making the window about the size of your kindle (hand held) and see if it is still ok...

I think if it hasn't been too long, you can get Amazon  customer service to return the book and give you a refund.

Never tolerate poor formatting on an ebook. There are too many to choose from that are formatted just fine.

Once again,  thanks for a prompt and comprehensive answer. Actually, as last time, I have meanwhile found a solution much in the same direction as your advice! I’ve discovered that if I read the book after turning the screen sideways (i.e. landscape as opposed to portrait), it pops into a readable form. As this is just as easy a way of reading, I can stick to that.

You are quite right! If I squash my Kindle for PC screen up to about Handheld Kindle size, it does indeed go haywire!

I shall try complaining, however, as you advise this attitude; I’m not the basically tolerant type of person but I’m sure it is better to make a stand against bad formatting. You use the term ‘wrapping’! Is this the accepted term for my problem???

Thanks for letting me know Tim... Certainly let Amazon know if any books you get have a formatting issue that is unacceptable. I think you have 7 days in order to return a book and get a refund for just about any reason... Another thing you can do is mention the formatting issues in a review of the book, to save others the suffering, or at least warn them what they will be getting.

Wrapping is a term for text ... like some documents, it doesn't matter how big the window is, the text "wraps" or realigns itself to fit the page width just the way it should.  If you use the "enter" key to make text look good in a document, you could get the type of formatting you see on that book. The Enter key may drop the text down a line as far as your eyes are concerned, but to the Kindle, that enter key command means "start another paragraph or line." Not good at all if it is done throughout the book. If they had just kept typing and let the text "wrap" naturally, it would have been fine no matter what Kindle you use. It would just adjust naturally to the size of the "page."

I hope you don't mind if I use this in a future (very soon) blog entry. This information may be valuable to others.

Kindle Skills - Help someone with join.me

If you are handy with your computer and find yourself the one friends and family come to with questions, this little free tool can come in handy.

Join.me is a website with benefits. It allows (with a little javascript help) you to visit your friend or family member's computer from the comfort of your own home. The only thing required is you both have a nice fast Internet connection.

Here's how it works:

• You go to http://join.me
• Your friend goes to http://join.me
• Your friend clicks the share button
• You click the join button
• Your friend will need to answer yes to the java working and give permission. I have found it to be quite secure though, and highly recommend it, having used it myself.
• A little control panel will appear in the middle (top) of your friend's computer screen.
• Your friend gives you the join.me number listed there.
• You enter it where the share information asks for it...
• Bam!  You are able to help your friend.

You can be on the phone while this is happening. Your friend can click the little mouse icon on the far right of the display on his computer and give you actual permission to take "control" of his computer. It is all done within your (and their) browser window, very neatly, and neither of you needs to be a brain surgeon to make it work. It just does. It is a perfect way for you to share your skill and love of your Kindle with someone just beginning their journey.

When you are both finished, just close everything. You will not be able to access your friend's computer unless another session is started, when another entirely different number will be displayed.

I have used this to help quite a few people thrash out various problems and answer questions about their computer or Kindles. It is wonderful to actually be able to show someone how to download a book file, then transfer it to their Kindle. This program is so good, one lady actually asked me to "take a look at her printer" while I was at it. We both got a good giggle out of that. Just a few days ago I used it with my friend Ralph. He had a new computer and was having difficulty with his email. He's fine now, and I had a great time showing him around gmail on his new computer, even though he lives several hundred miles away.

The only thing I don't like about join.me is its use of the color orange.... the only color I have an actual aversion to. I am learning to tolerate it.
